Using WS-FTP to upload files

The below steps will walk you through the basics of uploading content to your account using the graphical FTP feature of WS-FTP 95 LE.

1.    Launch your FTP client from your desktop or Start menu.

2.    After opening the WSFTP program you should have a window that opened up called Session Properties as shown below:

Profile Name: Enter your Profile Name, such as your domain name. The Profile Name can be whatever you would like to name this FTP site. WS-FTP will then save these session properties, similar to bookmarking a Web site in a browser.

Host Name/Address: Enter your Host Name/Address. A Host Name/Address can either be your domain name or your IP Address. In the above example we chose a format of ftp.yourdomain.com.

Host Type: You can leave the WS_FTP default Host Type section of Automatic.

User ID: Enter your User ID. Your user ID is going to be the first eight (8) characters of your domain name.

Password: Enter your Password. Your password is going to be your administrative password that you choose at the time you signed up your account.

3.    Click OK to connect to your Web site.

4.    You are now logged into what is called your home directory. You should see the below directory structure:

5.    You will notice that the WSFTP_LE interface shows content in two windows. The section on the left is called a Local System. Local System is your local computer. Open the directory where you saved your local copy of your Web site. The below image shows a directory listing in the left window.

6.    You will notice two arrows in between the split screen. This is how you upload and download files from your local computer to the server.

7.    Make sure that you have your www directory opened on the Remote Site window as shown below:

8.    Select all of the files that you would like to upload from your Local System to the Remote Site.

9.    Click on the à arrow key to upload your files to your Remote Site.

10.  Choose ASCII, Binary, or Auto mode from the center of your WS_FTP screen as shown below:

All Web pages and scripts ( html, cgi, php, etc.) should be uploaded in ASCII mode. Image, sound, video, or servlets should be uploaded in Binary mode. WS_FTP also comes with an Auto mode that can be set based on file extension (.jpg, .html, etc.). It is designed to automatically detect and transfer files in either ASCII or Binary mode. We do not recommend this method as it can corrupt a file if not transferred properly.
